What's the difference between Keyword and Subject?

Use the Keyword search when you know only one or a few key words in the title, subject, contents, or sponsoring organization. A Keyword search retrieves records in which the term or terms appear. However, a Keyword search may retrieve records which are not relevant to your specific need.

A Keyword search may retrieve records which are not relevant to your specific need For example: depression
Retrieves records in which "depression" appears, without regard to the subject, which may be history, economics, psychology, geology, meteorology, astronomy, etc.

A Subject search is based on the controlled terms in the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH).

For best results, search a subject exactly as shown in these lists on a record For example: Agriculture -- Indiana -- History
or just: agriculture indiana history
For example: Walker, Alice
or just: walker alice

The IWU Catalog has separate options for LCSH

Once you have retrieved a relevant record, just click on its subject heading to search for other items on the same subject.
